Memorial services were held April 14, 2016 at First Mennonite Church hosted in the facilities of Bethel Mennonite Church, Mountain Lake, MN. Cremation has taken place

-----------------

Estella C. Loewen was born on December 19, 1917, to Nicolai F. Loewen and Katharina (Dick) Loewen in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. She reached the age of 98 years and 3 months. She was baptized in the First Mennonite Church (May 31, 1936) where she became a long standing member and faithful volunteer.
Estella graduated from the Mountain Lake High school and went on to further her education at the Mankato Business College.
Memories compiled by her children:
Our mother will be missed a lot by her family and friends. She was, and will continue to be, an inspiration to us. She was a strong, courageous, hard-working woman who did not need to wander further than her own four walls to find adventure and fulfillment. Her days were structured around her family, her home and her strong belief in God. She was a great cook and her daughter published a cookbook of Estella's favorite recipes which continues to be a "hit" for us.
Mom's gardens of vegetables and flowers could have been the envy of anyone. We will always remember the hundreds and hundreds of jars of canned home grown garden vegetables, and fruits picked from the farm's trees and commercial fruits.
She taught us to respect and learn from the differences in people and from different cultures. She taught that although we all may be different, we are still "all beautiful flowers in God's Garden."
One day, her soon-to-be son-in-law paid a visit to our home. Mom had been trying for months to get us to sit with our feet on the floor, with limited success. We were gathered around the table when she spotted some shoes that she assumed belonged to our brother, under the table on a kitchen chair. She gave the offending feet a whack and said, "GET YOUR FEET OFF THAT CHAIR!!!" As our future brother-in-law's feet hit the floor, he replied, "YES, MA'AM!" It embarrassed her greatly, but she laughed whole-heartedly along with the rest of us!
Mom took on several jobs at different locations during her life, but her devotion to her family always came first. She must have been exhausted many days with all her duties, but she never complained or let us know tired she was.
One day, our brother was inspired to treat Mother to a respite in her day in the kitchen. He caught a young jack rabbit while cultivating and put it into his empty lunch pail. In order to make sure Mother would be the first to open and wash the used lunch pail, he put it by the kitchen sink. He missed his mother's shock upon opening it, but he learned later that young jackrabbits can swim quite well. When she opened the lunch pail, the rabbit landed in the dishwater and caused a great deal of activity. Mother paid him back one day when she had made a special treat for the family. She baked apricot pirogues for everyone, but had baked a hot pepper in his serving.
We have many, many happy and indelibly imprinted memories due to Mom's humorous side, and also by her serious side.
Some other memories of Mother (many of which shaped our lives) are:
• She taught us how to live in a good way by example
• Getting up before the crack of dawn on Saturdays to bake bread and tweibach, prepare food for the day plus Sunday dinners and faspas and having the kitchen cleaned and floors washed before noon
• Lunches that she brought to dad in the field, but packing enough for us children as well.
• Her love of fishing
• Her kindness, gentleness, caring and attention to us when we were sick or hurt
• Her ability to live on a shoestring and never complain about it
• Going on trips to Beltrami National forest to pick pails and pails of wild blueberries to eat fresh and to can
• Picking wild strawberries and serving them with fresh cream from our cows
• Praying for help before dashing to the car during a severe thunderstorm when dad was away.
• Being able to apologize after giving one of us an undeserved spanking (her spankings were never harsh physically, but certainly did catch our attention!)
• How she settled a big quarrel between two of us sisters, by making one of us wash one side of the kitchen window while the other washed the other side. (The quarrel soon erupted into raucous laughter)
• Her pies! They were unbeatable!
• Taking the time to talk to someone who was abusing and neglecting his cattle, following up on this and reporting this to authorities when nothing was done to help the abused animal
• Allowing Dad to keep motherless, newly born lambs behind the cook stove.
• Letting one of us cook a "Thanksgiving" pigeon in a toy roaster alongside the Thanksgiving turkey
• How she sacrificed in order to send us to college, and the wonderful care packages and letters she sent while we were there
• Her embarrassment when someone acknowledged her gifts and talents
• Welcoming our spouses and in-laws into the family and her love for her grandchildren and great grandchildren
• Her spirit of adventure and good sense of humor
• Her indignation at the injustices in life
• Her honesty, integrity and her courage to stick to her values and beliefs
• The enjoyment she had in serving afternoon snacks and coffee at the Good Samaritan Home
• Her sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, and quilting
• Her involvement in the church and her unswerving faith in God
• Her keen and alert mind right to the end of her life
• The many conversations we had about current and past affairs of the country and the world
Mother taught us by example right to the end of her life. She taught us how to die by how she faced her own death with tremendous grace and courage, and even humor. In the words of her sister, Erna: "Isn't it just like your mom to enjoy a good happening. I can see her smiling. Keep strong!"

THANK YOU MOM FOR BEING THE LOVING AND GENUINE WOMAN THAT YOU ALWAYS WERE. WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE AND REMEMBER YOU! (Karen, Jane, Jake and Grace)

In the early 1950s, she worked as director of nursing at the newly opened Rocky Ford Mennonite Hospital, then, from 1956 to 1974, as director of nursing services at the La Junta Mennonite Hospital (now the La Junta Medical Center). Later in her career, she worked as a nurse in Maui, Hawaii, the Poudre Valley Medical Center in Fort Collins, Colorado, and the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Loveland, Colorado. In retirement, she returned to Pennsylvania, living in State College, Millersville, and Lancaster.

She was active in Mennonite churches wherever she lived and held lay leadership positions in many of them. Most recently, she was a member of Community Mennonite Church in Lancaster.

The defining quality of Emma's life was her commitment to serve and nurture others, as a nurse, as an administrator, as a loving daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and neighbor. This was a lived commitment deeply grounded in her Christian faith, learned from her parents and strengthened throughout her life by the Mennonite community in which she was firmly embedded.

She is survived by: sister, Sara Hess Hess, wife of the late Herbert S. Hess and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers: Joseph, Simon, and James Hess; and sisters: Alma Hershey, and Margie Hershey.

He leaves to mourn besides his parents, on sister, Brianne Jo (2), grandparents, Lonnie and Charlene Hostetler of Tampico, IL., Darrel and Mary Hostetler, of Buffalo, MO., great-grandparents, John and Ellen Martin of Tampico, IL., Les and Bert Hostetler, Tampico, IL., Fred and Rhonda Eigsti, of Buffalo, MO., and Mrs. (Tim) Betty Hostetler of Buffalo, MO., 7 uncles, 4 aunts, and 13 cousins.

We were blessed to have Bo with us for 9 ½ months. At 3 days old he was flown to Little Rock Children’s Hospital, where he spent 2 ½ months until he was able to come home. He was at home for the next 4 months and in good health. The last 3 ½ months of his life he was in and out of the hospital and was a brave little fighter through all his pain and sickness. On April 13 he was flown to St. Louis Children’s hospital, and then on April 30th, he was flown with Mom and Dad to Palo Alto, CA. to be evaluated for a liver transplant.
